The site, on Broadway between State and Union streets, has been a block-sized hole in the ground since the Hotel San Diego was demolished in 2006. The new courthouse will stand 16 stories tall with about 467,000 square feet of space. It will house 6 District courtrooms and judicial chambers for 12 judges. The courthouse also will provide offices for the district clerk, U.S. Marshals Service, U.S. Pretrial Services, and future Government Tenants. Also planned are a ground level community plaza and mural garden with a combined 36,000-square-feet of space.
